Carbon

Carbon is one of the key chemical elements of the Universe as well as our home planet. Without carbon there would be no organic life existing.

Today mankind is using carbon in three ways:

  1. As fossil fuel for heating, motion and source to produce electricity
  2. As raw material for chemical and metallurgical processes
  3. As raw material for specialized materials (such as carbonfiber), water filtration and pharmaceutical products

Glen Eastman Carbon b.v. – Glen Eastman’s trading subsidiary – is a trader of carbon products as raw material. These carbon products are strategic raw materials – without these carbon products like coke or anthracite mankind would have no steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminium, nickel or other metals as well as no limestone and cement. 

The current challenges with carbon’s role in global warming and strategies to reduce CO2-emissions stimulate a number of industrial R&D-projects to substitute carbon with hydrogen as commodity. In certain sectors this poses significant difficulties because of many advantages that carbon provides compared to hydrogen. An example is the role of the so called „Boudouard-reaction“ in metallurgical processes. From our perspective R&D resources and strategies should focus on substituting carbon as fossil fuel for heating, mobility and electricity applications with hydrogen-based fuels and technologies. This would result in a more efficient approach in improving and balancing our global climate for a sustainable health of our planet and life.
